🧪 What Is It?

Calcium carbide (CaC₂) is a gray, rocky chemical that reacts violently with water to produce acetylene gas (C₂H₂) — the same gas used in oxy-acetylene welding torches, which burn at 3,500°C. The reaction is immediate: drop a chunk of carbide into water and it fizzes, hisses, and fills any enclosed space with a highly flammable gas that smells like garlic and death. Miners used to use carbide lamps — drip water onto carbide, burn the acetylene through a nozzle, and you've got a headlamp. Farmers in Southeast Asia still use carbide cannons to scare birds off rice paddies. The tradition goes back centuries. The principle hasn't changed.

A pressure cooker takes this from a novelty to something genuinely terrifying. In an open container, acetylene disperses into the air as fast as it's generated. In a sealed pressure cooker, it accumulates. The gas pressure builds as the carbide reacts with the water, and unlike the steam cannon (build #347) you don't need a stove — the chemical reaction generates gas pressure at room temperature. Once the pressure reaches your target, you ignite it. Acetylene mixed with air in the 2.5–81% concentration range is explosive. Inside a pressure cooker connected to a barrel, the detonation front accelerates down the tube, pushing everything ahead of it at supersonic velocity.

The result is less a "cannon" and more an "event." The detonation produces a concussive blast that you feel in your chest at 50 feet. The muzzle flash is a 3-foot fireball. The sound is a flat, sharp CRACK that echoes off buildings and hills for a solid two seconds. Dogs in a 1-mile radius go insane. Car alarms within earshot activate. If you put a projectile in the barrel, it leaves at genuinely hazardous velocity — but honestly, most people who build these don't bother with projectiles. The noise and the fireball are the point. This is pure, distilled spectacle.

Calcium carbide is legal, cheap ($10 for a pound at welding supply stores or online), and available without any special permits. It's sold as a mole and gopher repellent at garden centers. You drop it in gopher holes and add water. The acetylene drives the animals out. What you do with a pressure cooker full of it is between you and your neighbors' homeowner's insurance.

  • Stovetop pressure cooker — 8-quart or larger, with removable jiggler valve (thrift store, $8–12)
  • Calcium carbide — pea-sized chunks, available as welding supply or gopher repellent (welding supplier or online, $8–12 per pound)
  • Steel barrel — 2" ID, 3-4 feet long, threaded or welded to the cooker valve port (hardware store, $5–10)
  • Spark ignition — piezo grill igniter or spark plug wired to a battery, mounted through the cooker wall (hardware store, $3–8)
  • Ball valve — 1" brass, between cooker and barrel, to contain gas until ready to fire (hardware store, $12–20)
  • Pipe fittings and adapters — to connect valve port to ball valve to barrel (hardware store, $8–15)
  • PTFE thread tape — for all threaded connections (hardware store, $1)
  • Water — the other reactant. A few tablespoons is all you need (free)
  • Hearing protection — rated for gunfire (NRR 30+) (hardware store, $10–15)
  • Safety glasses — full wrap-around (hardware store, $5)

🔨 Build Steps

  1. Set up the pressure cooker. Remove the jiggler valve. Install a brass hose barb or threaded adapter in the valve port, connected to a ball valve, connected to the barrel via pipe adapters. Same plumbing as the steam cannon (build #347). The ball valve stays closed during gas generation and opens when you fire. Unlike the steam cannon, this system doesn't need heat — the gas is generated chemically at room temperature.

  2. Install the spark igniter. Drill a small hole in the side of the pressure cooker near the bottom. Mount a spark plug through the hole with a rubber gasket seal, or thread a piezo igniter through it. The spark needs to occur inside the vessel, in the gas space above the water line. A piezo grill igniter with an extended wire electrode works well — the piezo body stays outside the vessel, the wire goes through the wall to the spark gap inside. Test the spark with the lid off — you should see and hear a crisp snap.

  3. Load the carbide. Place 2-3 tablespoons of water in the bottom of the cooker. Drop in 3-5 pea-sized chunks of calcium carbide. The reaction starts immediately — you'll hear fizzing and see gas bubbles. Quickly lock the lid and close the ball valve. Acetylene is heavier than air initially but mixes rapidly. The gas fills the headspace above the water and pressure begins to build. You don't need much — a small amount of carbide produces a disproportionate volume of gas.

  4. Wait for pressure. Watch the pressure gauge (if installed) or listen. The fizzing continues for 1-3 minutes as the carbide reacts. You want the headspace filled with a good acetylene-air mixture — the explosive range for acetylene is extremely wide (2.5–81% in air), so almost any mixture will ignite. Don't wait too long — acetylene at pressures above 15 PSI can decompose explosively even without an ignition source (acetylene is thermodynamically unstable at elevated pressure). If using a gauge, fire at or below 10 PSI to stay well within safe limits.

  5. Fire. Make sure the barrel is pointed at open ground, no one is downrange for at least 300 yards, and everyone nearby has hearing protection. Stand to the side of the barrel (never behind the cooker — if the lid fails, it goes straight up). Click the piezo igniter. The acetylene detonates with a flat, sharp CRACK and a massive muzzle flash. The pressure cooker rings like a bell. If you put a wad of newspaper or a tennis ball in the barrel before firing, it's now somewhere you can't see it.

  6. Reload. Open the lid (carefully — there may be residual hot gas). The inside will smell strongly of acetylene and calcium hydroxide (a white chalky residue). Add fresh water and carbide. Re-seal and repeat. Each shot takes about 3-5 minutes to reload and pressurize. The cooker can be fired dozens of times — there's no wear on the vessel from the gas deflagration, only from the carbide residue which washes out with water.

⚠️ Safety Notes

Spicy Level 5 build. Acetylene is one of the most dangerous industrial gases. It is explosive, toxic in high concentrations, and unstable under pressure.

  • Acetylene is explosive across almost its entire concentration range in air (2.5–81%). Any spark, flame, or hot surface ignites it. Do not generate acetylene indoors, near open flames, near running engines, or near electrical equipment that may spark. One spark in a room filling with acetylene causes a fuel-air explosion.
  • Acetylene is unstable above 15 PSI. At elevated pressure, acetylene can decompose explosively without any external ignition source — the molecule breaks apart exothermically on its own. This is why acetylene cylinders contain a porous filler soaked in acetone to stabilize the gas. Your pressure cooker has no such stabilization. Never allow pressure to exceed 10 PSI. If the gauge reads above 10, vent immediately through the ball valve pointed in a safe direction.
  • The detonation produces a shockwave. Standing too close causes hearing damage even with ear protection. Maintain at least 20 feet of distance. The blast can shatter nearby glass.
  • Never seal the barrel. A sealed barrel with ignited acetylene behind it is a pipe bomb. The barrel must always be open at the muzzle end so the blast vents forward.
  • Calcium carbide reacts violently with water and produces heat. Adding too much carbide at once generates gas faster than the valve can vent, potentially exceeding the cooker's pressure rating. Start with small amounts (3-5 pea-sized chunks) and work up.
  • The muzzle flash can ignite dry grass, leaves, and clothing. Fire only over bare dirt, concrete, or green grass. Have a fire extinguisher or charged hose ready.
  • Check local noise ordinances and fire codes. This produces a report comparable to a 12-gauge shotgun. Many jurisdictions regulate this level of noise.
