🧪 What Is It?

A steam generator is any device that boils water in a sealed vessel and delivers the resulting pressurized steam through a hose or pipe to a point of use. Commercial steam generators power everything from wallpaper strippers to wood bending boxes to industrial cleaning systems to actual turbines. They cost $200–2,000 depending on output and pressure rating. A stovetop pressure cooker does the same job: it boils water in a sealed vessel at 15 PSI, producing a continuous supply of pressurized steam at 250°F. The only difference is that a commercial unit has a fitting for a hose. So put a fitting on your pressure cooker.

Replace the jiggler valve with a hose barb or quick-connect fitting and you have a portable steam source that delivers pressurized steam wherever you point the hose. Feed it into a plywood steam box and you're bending hardwood into curves that would crack and split without steam softening. Attach a nozzle and you're blasting grease off engine parts with the same steam cleaning principle that professional detailers charge $150 an hour for. Point it at a small turbine wheel and you're generating electricity from a stovetop — the same thermodynamic cycle that powers every coal and nuclear plant on Earth, just at a much smaller and slightly more ridiculous scale.

The pressure cooker is uniquely suited for this because it's already a tested, safety-valved pressure vessel with a known pressure rating. You're not welding a boiler from scratch and hoping it holds. You're tapping into a vessel that was designed, tested, and mass-produced to contain exactly this pressure at exactly this temperature. All you're adding is a way to direct the steam somewhere useful instead of letting it whistle into the kitchen.

  • Stovetop pressure cooker — 8-quart or larger, with removable jiggler valve (thrift store, $8–12)
  • Brass hose barb or quick-connect fitting — 1/4" or 3/8", threaded to match the valve port (hardware store, $3–5)
  • High-temperature silicone hose — rated for 250°F+ and 15+ PSI, steam-rated (industrial supplier, $8–15 for 6 feet)
  • Hose clamps — stainless steel, for securing hose to fittings (hardware store, $2)
  • PTFE thread tape — for sealing threaded connections (hardware store, $1)
  • Ball valve — 1/4" brass, for controlling steam flow at the output end (hardware store, $5–8)
  • Steam box (for wood bending) — PVC pipe or plywood box, sealed at one end, steam inlet at the other (scrap materials, $5–15)
  • Safety glasses and heat-resistant gloves — for working around pressurized steam (hardware store, $5–10)

🔨 Build Steps

  1. Remove the jiggler valve and measure the port. Lift the weighted jiggler off the lid. Examine the hole — most pressure cookers have a simple round opening, 5/16" to 3/8" diameter. Measure it precisely. You need a hose barb fitting that either threads into this hole or press-fits with a tight seal. Some cooker lids have a threaded nipple under the jiggler — try threading a brass fitting onto it before drilling anything.

  2. Install the steam outlet fitting. Thread or press-fit a brass hose barb into the valve port. Wrap threads with PTFE tape. If the port is smooth-bore (no threads), use a fitting with a flanged base and seal it with high-temperature RTV silicone, clamping it until cured. The fitting must be steam-tight at 15 PSI. Test by pressurizing the cooker with water and checking for leaks with soapy water around the fitting.

  3. Connect the steam hose. Slide high-temperature silicone hose over the barb and clamp it with a stainless steel hose clamp. Regular rubber or vinyl hose will soften and blow off at steam temperatures — this is not optional. The hose must be rated for at least 250°F and 20 PSI. Route the hose to your steam box, cleaning nozzle, or work area. Install a ball valve at the output end so you can shut off steam flow without depressurizing the entire cooker.

  4. Build a steam box for wood bending. A 4" PVC drainpipe, 4–6 feet long, capped at one end and fitted with a steam inlet at the other, makes an effective steam box. Drill a small drain hole at the bottom of the capped end so condensate drips out instead of pooling. Insert dowel rods through the pipe as internal supports to keep wood pieces centered in the steam flow. Feed the pressure cooker's steam hose into the inlet end and seal around it with a rag or foam plug — a perfect seal isn't necessary since you want some steam to escape to maintain flow.

  5. Steam bend wood. Fill the pressure cooker 2/3 with water and bring to full pressure. Open the ball valve and let steam flow into the box for 10 minutes to preheat it. Insert your wood piece — air-dried hardwood bends best (oak, ash, walnut). The rule of thumb is one hour of steaming per inch of thickness. The steam softens lignin, the natural polymer that makes wood rigid. Once softened, remove the piece quickly (you have about 60 seconds before it cools and stiffens) and clamp it into a bending form. Hold it clamped for 24 hours while it dries in the new shape.

  6. Steam clean with a nozzle attachment. Replace the ball valve with a brass nozzle or attach a narrow copper tube as a steam lance. Pressurized steam at 250°F cuts through grease, oil, dried adhesives, and organic buildup without chemicals. Point the nozzle at engine parts, oven grates, workshop tools, or anything caked with carbonized residue. The steam condenses on contact, transferring enormous thermal energy into the grime and loosening it from the surface. Wipe clean. This is exactly what commercial steam cleaners do — yours just has a more interesting boiler.

  7. Refill safely during long sessions. For extended steam box sessions, the cooker will run low on water. Never open a pressurized cooker to add water. Instead, turn off the heat, wait for pressure to drop to zero (watch the gauge or safety lock), open the lid, refill to the 2/3 line, relock, and bring back to pressure. A 16-quart cooker holds enough water for about 90 minutes of continuous steaming. Plan your refill breaks accordingly.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Pressurized steam at 250°F causes instant, severe burns on contact. Wear heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses when working near the steam outlet. Keep skin and face away from the hose and nozzle.
  • Never kink, pinch, or block the steam hose while the cooker is at pressure. A blocked hose turns the entire system into a pressurized dead end — the safety valve on the cooker should vent, but don't test it intentionally.
  • Ensure the cooker's overpressure safety valve is never blocked or removed. When you replace the jiggler valve port with a hose fitting, the separate safety plug must remain functional. If your cooker only has one vent port, install a tee fitting with both the hose and a relief valve.
  • Use the cooker outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Continuous steam output fills enclosed spaces with hot water vapor rapidly, creating visibility and burn hazards.
